Dangling Donut

Dear Members and Constituents,
During a hallway conversation yesterday morning, something dawned on me: the NBA playoffs are like the electoral college system. You can have the majority of the points (or votes) and still loose the series (or election). Our Denver Nuggets trail the series 3-2 despite having outscored the Lakers 520-515. Yeah, yeah, I know, cry me an Al Gore. Fortunately, although I am traveling to Florida this afternoon, none of the games take place there. As for the outcome of this series, I believe the Nuggets are ideally positioned to take game 6 at home tonight and use that momentum to beat LA at the Staples Center on Sunday. You're welcome to your opinion, that is mine and I'm sticking to it. As for the experts, what do they know anyway? Destiny calls.

Not convinced? Here's more proof. This is Matt Hawthorne's first time as donut boy. This would also be the Nuggets' first time at the finals (the Lakers have been 29 times). Matt's debut. The Nuggets' debut. Think of it as a good omen. Another good omen: we got a new coffee maker today. So, what are you waiting for? Come on down and grab a Krispy Kreme donut -or more- to toast our NBA team of destiny.
Happy Friday!

Donut Doodle Dandy

Dear Members and Constituents, In trying to figure-out Wednesday’s cool-looking Google Doodle ( Jorge Luis Borges’ 112 th birthday ), I stumbled across a list of Google Doodles you’ll never see. This, and a Rockies game later that day, were sufficient inspiration to get my head spinning around what other doodles Google might never noodle? I’m sure you’ll probably have a few ideas of your own, but I was able to come-up with a couple. How about a former Colorado Rockies player whose unfortunate encounter with a moth put him in the news this week? The Matt Holliday doodle might look something like this… Another item which, surprisingly enough, has not been made into a doodle are donuts. Although I was slightly taken aback to find this delicious pastry has not been featured, after the initial disappointment, I decided to take matters into my own hands and take a stab at one (perhaps Google can use it next year for national donut day )… or to celebrate Greek police having “ blown a ho...

Gilding the Donut

Friends, Despite writing about donuts (sort of) for over 20 years, I don’t believe in sugar coating, after all, honesty is the best policy. Gilding, on the other hand I’m good with. Take the church of the Society of Jesus in Quito, (AKA La Compañía). Built in fits and starts between 1597 and 1765, the volcanic rock baroque facade conceals a spectacular interior. I had the chance to go inside this week and although I had heard about the gold leaf work inside, the descriptions had not done it justice. The details from floor to ceiling transport you to another world, perhaps that’s the point. If you’re ever there, be sure to visit. And while you’re there stop by one of the many panaderías … if you’re lucky they might even have a donut. Happy Friday!

Nickel for Your Thoughts

Friends, I was 24 the first time I was offered a penny for my thoughts. At the time, the novel expression brought me back from my musings and it has stuck with me ever since. Today, as I remove Penny Lane from my playlist and replace it with Nickelback, it occurs to me that now may be a good time to binge watch Penny Dreadful on Paramount Plus. I ponder the penny pinchers’ move, perhaps these bad pennies are penny wise, pound foolish. Let's hope it doesn't drop a penny on prices. Meanwhile, all I can do is bite into my donut and close my eyes. Mmmm… worth every penny. Happy Friday!
