Stop, Collaborate and Listen

Friends,

As we begin the Chinese year of the fire horse (not firehose as some would have you believe), it felt appropriate to lean-in to the fire theme and give up ice for lent. It should be good for the environment, after all it takes energy to freeze water. It can also serve as a small form of civil protest to the atrocities being committed by this nefarious agency. I can hear myself saying it already: “water, no ICE”. I suppose this would also apply to the icing on the cake donuts.

So, what size is ICE as it continues to metastasize? Hard to say, but we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg. It’s gotten so bad that when National Geographic was promoting an article on black ice, I thought it was a PR stunt trying to clean up the agency’s image. Turns out it was about slippery roads, not the slippery slope our government a[[ears to be on.

Whatever your lenten sacrifice might be (if anything), I hope we can all agree to say “neigh” to abusive masked men dehumanizing immigrants.

Donut Doodle Dandy

Dear Members and Constituents, In trying to figure-out Wednesday’s cool-looking Google Doodle ( Jorge Luis Borges’ 112 th birthday ), I stumbled across a list of Google Doodles you’ll never see. This, and a Rockies game later that day, were sufficient inspiration to get my head spinning around what other doodles Google might never noodle? I’m sure you’ll probably have a few ideas of your own, but I was able to come-up with a couple. How about a former Colorado Rockies player whose unfortunate encounter with a moth put him in the news this week? Friends, This week’s news were literally radioactive -and I’m not talking about the fallout from the Trump-Putin summit. I’m talking mutate your DNA-exciting news. I’m talking Marie Curie-worthy news. I’m talking Geiger-counter-tilting news. I’m talking… well, you get the (glow in the dark) picture. A study about a lone wolf collared near Chernobyl and tracked on a long trek spawned the headline “ Could Chernobyl Wolves Be Spreading Mutations? ” While one can be forgiven for envisioning a flying wolf with laser eyes and a green aura about it, the disappointing story basically says most mutations are harmful to an animal’s health -and unhealthy animals are unlikely to travel 250 miles and mate with other wolves, contaminating the gene pool. Donut Debate Me

Friends, The desire to be right can close our minds to divergent (and, heaven forbid, superior) points of view. We build echo chambers, carefully curating views that support our own and dismissing differing voices out of hand. When opinion is mistaken for fact, inconvenient truths are easily discarded. And so, we dig in our heels and trade healthy debate for hate. Ironically, it is quite possible no two people would agree on everything. I think maturity and respect are the key to growth. Leaving the comfort of one's own biases and deeply held beliefs and truly listening is not easy, but it's a necessary start. Of course, a raspberry pistachio donut always helps. Happy Friday!
