A Thousand Fridays

Friends,

This is post #1,000 to the Friday Donuts blog, can you believe it? Granted, there have been more Fridays than posts (all my Qwest Friday donut club posts and most of the first year of Level 3 Friday donut club posts were lost). Still, there's something about big round numbers that calls for dramatic acknowledgement. 

Someone once asked me if I ever feel lazy and do reruns. The truth is that while I may subconsciously do variations on certain themes (space, philosophy, news, morality, humor, poetry), I always try to keep these notes as fresh and original as possible. I've also been asked if I have a favorite post. Well, I don't but I figured this momentous occasion warrants a retrospective. If you have the time, a warm beverage and a donut, I've curated a few above-average posts. A word of caution, reading these may take you down Alice in Wonderland's proverbial donut hole. If not, I hope you at least have a donut.
In any event, without further ado, here's a curated selection of a dozen pretty decent posts I've done over the years.
12. Oops O's were omitted. A fun lipogram. Now you have to google it. Or ... infer the word's meaning from the blog.
11.  Hairy donuts. With the help of a razor, I try to channel each weekday's personality.
10. Big news. An attempt to graphically represent the 24-hour news cycle.
9. Donut MQ. This magic quadrant goes to prove this blog really is about donuts. Occasionally. 
8. Donut doodle dandy. Back when Google Doodles were a novelty, I took a stab at drawing one or two.
7. Binary schminary. Frames-up false trade-offs with some dry humor.
6. Bring your own Geiger counter. Attempts to connect several radioactive news stories.
5. Donuts without borders. A rambling note on soccer, doctors and human rights. 
4. Birds of a feather. How many fowl idioms can you cram into a single post? Challenge accepted!
3. The donut fairy was here.A drive-by donut drop-off triggers a rare Tuesday post.
2. Night shift notes. The top-ten subtle changes brought about by the pandemic. The photo is priceless.
1. A dozen rules to live by. If you only have time for one, read this one. Trust me.

Donut Doodle Dandy

Dear Members and Constituents, In trying to figure-out Wednesday’s cool-looking Google Doodle ( Jorge Luis Borges’ 112 th birthday ), I stumbled across a list of Google Doodles you’ll never see. This, and a Rockies game later that day, were sufficient inspiration to get my head spinning around what other doodles Google might never noodle? I’m sure you’ll probably have a few ideas of your own, but I was able to come-up with a couple. Bring your own Geiger counter!

Friends, This week’s news were literally radioactive -and I’m not talking about the fallout from the Trump-Putin summit. I’m talking mutate your DNA-exciting news. I’m talking Marie Curie-worthy news. I’m talking Geiger-counter-tilting news. I’m talking… well, you get the (glow in the dark) picture. A study about a lone wolf collared near Chernobyl and tracked on a long trek spawned the headline “ Could Chernobyl Wolves Be Spreading Mutations? ” While one can be forgiven for envisioning a flying wolf with laser eyes and a green aura about it, the disappointing story basically says most mutations are harmful to an animal’s health -and unhealthy animals are unlikely to travel 250 miles and mate with other wolves, contaminating the gene pool. Donut Debate Me

Friends, The desire to be right can close our minds to divergent (and, heaven forbid, superior) points of view. We build echo chambers, carefully curating views that support our own and dismissing differing voices out of hand. When opinion is mistaken for fact, inconvenient truths are easily discarded. And so, we dig in our heels and trade healthy debate for hate. Ironically, it is quite possible no two people would agree on everything. I think maturity and respect are the key to growth. Leaving the comfort of one's own biases and deeply held beliefs and truly listening is not easy, but it's a necessary start. Of course, a raspberry pistachio donut always helps. Happy Friday!
